FLORENCE -- Mark your calendars for the Francis Marion University Homecoming Day 2000, set for Saturday, Jan. 29. Activities and events are on tap for students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
On Friday, Jan. 28 the following events are slated:
At 6 p.m., the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity will hold a reunion in the Ervin Dining Hall; at 7 p.m., the Patriot athletic program will honor its latest Hall of Fame athletes and hold the Patriots Brigade Academic Awards Banquet in the Ervin Dining Hall. At 8 p.m., the National Pan Hellenic Council Step Show will be held in the Smith University Center gym. Cost to attend the show is $10 per person. Events set for Saturday, Jan. 29 include:
At 9 a.m., the School of Business alumni will meet for a breakfast in the Ervin Dining Hall. At 10 a.m., the “Old-Timers” volleyball match will begin, along with an “Introduction to the Virtual Library” by Yvette Pierce in the FMU Rogers Library, room 201, and the mathematics department alumni reunion, in the Leatherman Science Facility, Room 406.
At 11 a.m., the biology alumni reunion will be held in the Leatherman Science Facility, Room 207; the athletic department’s Silent Auction fundraiser bidding will begin in the Smith University Center Canteen; and the women’s basketball, soccer, tennis, and cross country “Old-Timers” events will begin.
At 11:30 a.m., the “Old-Timers” softball game begins and at noon the Department of Education Luncheon will begin. Cost of the luncheon is $5 per person. The Baptist Student "Re-Union" will host a lunch in the Baptist Student Center at noon, also, and cost is $6 per person.
Also at noon, the baseball and men’s basketball “Old-Timers” games will begin in the gym and on Cornell Field, along with a Tailgate Party for students and alumni, outside the Smith University Center, on the north patio. WJMX, a local radio station, will be on hand for a live remote from noon- 2 p.m.
At 2 p.m. the nationally-ranked Patriot women will take on the women’s basketball team of Columbus State University in the Smith University Center gym, and at 3:45 p.m. two former FMU athletes will be inducted into the FMU Hall of Fame. At 4 p.m., the Patriot men will take on the men of Columbus State in basketball. At halftime, the 2000 FMU Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned, and at 6 p.m., the athletic department’s Live Auction will begin in the gym.
At 7 p.m., in the Ervin Dining Hall, members of the FMU Alumni Association are invited to a post-game party with faculty in celebration of FMU's 30th anniversary and in honor of the 2000 Distinguished Alumni recipients.
