FLORENCE -- Athol Fugard's Valley Song will be presented by A Mixed Company on Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. in the McNair Science Building auditorium at Francis Marion University.
Valley Song, one of the FMU Artist Series productions, is the first play Fugard has written since apartheid ended in his native South Africa. Set on a present-day, post-apartheid South African tenant farm, a young woman of mixed race yearns to go to Johannesburg and study music and escape the tedium of rural life. Unfortunately, her grandfather wants her to stay and follow in his footsteps, working the land and planting crops as he always has.
The play premiered in New Jersey in 1995 and shows the contrasts of a classic generation-gap set-up, with old ways pitted against the new. The play provides the playwright with an opportunity to showcase the talents for characterization and subtle symbolism that have made him famous.
A Mixed Company, a repertory company composed of professional actors with stage, screen and television experience, was formed in 1993.
