IGA establishes athletic scholarship at FMU

FLORENCE, S.C. – IGA through W. Lee Flowers and Co. Inc. has established an endowed athletic scholarship with the Francis Marion University Foundation.

The award will be given to a student-athlete in one of FMU’s 14 sports who has shown excellent skill in the classroom and on the field of competition. The award will be renewed annually to the same recipient, on the recommendation of their coach, during their academic career (four years) as long as they remain in good standing with the university and the NCAA.

The amount of the scholarship may vary.

“We are very grateful for the support that IGA has shown toward Patriot athletics,” said FMU athletic director Murray Hartzler.  “Without support such as this, it would be impossible to attract high-quality student-athletes.”

Six of Francis Marion’s athletic teams (men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s basketball, and golf) have been nationally ranked at some point this year.

The school recently named 113 of its student-athletes to the FMU Athletic-Academic Honor Roll. Over the past five years, Francis Marion has placed first or second in the number of student-athletes named to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll.
