FMU to celebrate Spirit Week, Feb. 12-17

FLORENCE – Francis Marion University will celebrate Spirit Week, a week of activities geared toward FMU students, Feb. 12-17. FMU’s homecoming has traditionally been held during this time of year, but has been moved to the spring. This year, homecoming will be on March 31.

Spirit Week will kick off on Monday, Feb. 12, with king and queen voting. Voting will continue on Tuesday and conclude on Wednesday. The king and queen will represent the student body during both Spirit Week and homecoming. A banner competition will also be held Monday, with banners being displayed in the Smith University Center commons.

On Tuesday, comedian Darren Carter will give a free performance at 7 p.m. in the McNair Science Building auditorium.

Wednesday is being designated Spirit Day. Students are encouraged to wear school-spirited clothing and travel to Augusta, Ga., to watch the Patriot men’s and women’s basketball teams face Augusta State University in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.

A bonfire and pep rally are slated for Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., weather permitting. The event will be held between the FMU soccer field, track and baseball field. The pep rally will feature light refreshments and an original-cheer contest judged by the FMU cheerleaders.

The week will culminate Saturday, Feb. 17, beginning with non-alcoholic tailgating and a spirit competition from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in parking lot D on the FMU campus. There will also be a radio remote from WJMX-FM. The Patriot basketball teams will take on Kennesaw State University, with the women’s tip-off at 2 p.m. and the men’s game beginning at 4 p.m. Between games of the doubleheader, the FMU Athletic Hall of Fame will hold its annual induction ceremony. The king and queen will be crowned during halftime of the men’s game. Spirit Week will conclude with the Swamp Fox Club Live Auction and Gala, from 6:30-10 p.m. in the Smith University Center commons. A silent auction will be held earlier from 1-5 p.m. in the commons.

For more information about Spirit Week events, contact Tricia Turner, FMU’s student life coordinator, at 843-661-1183. For more information about the Swamp Fox Club Auction and Gala, contact FMU softball coach Bill Gray at 843-661-1238.
