FLORENCE, S.C. – Marvene Johnson of Florence has donated a collection of Tom Clark Gnomes to the Francis Marion University Foundation to fund an endowed scholarship in her late daughter’s name.
The 126-piece collection is comprised of retired pieces, many of which are signed by the artist. The collection’s value is estimated to be in excess of $25,000.
The FMU Foundation will auction the collection over the Internet on eBay, with the proceeds going to endow the Sharon Sturgeon-Jones Memorial Scholarship at FMU. The Internet auction will be coordinated by FMU’s computer science department.
The scholarship, which was established in 1984, is in memory of Sharon Sturgeon-Jones and her husband, Larry Jones, who were killed in a plane crash on Christmas Eve in 1983. Sharon was a 1978 graduate of FMU, with a B.S. degree in elementary education. While a student at FMU, she was a cheerleader, a sweetheart of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and active in other academic and social organizations.
The scholarship is an athletic scholarship, awarded to a member of the FMU women’s basketball team who is majoring in education. The amount of the scholarship will vary.
