FLORENCE, S.C. – Area high school students competed in the third-annual Foreign Language Declamation Competition hosted by the Francis Marion University Department of English, Modern Languages and Philosophy on Oct. 8.
More than 100 students from 18 high schools competed in French, Spanish and Latin. Participating schools were Cardinal Newman High School, Johnsonville High School, Crestwood High School, Trinity Collegiate School, Darlington High School, Marlboro County High School, Lake View High School, Hannah-Pamplico High School, Emmanuel Baptist School, Wilson High School, South Florence High School, West Florence High School, Marion High School, Pee Dee Academy, Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology; The Byrnes Schools, Avalon Academy, and Timmonsville High School.
Contestants were required to recite two selections: one mandatory selection and a second chosen from three selections. The students were judged on memorization, pronunciation and enunciation, phraseology, natural gestures and appropriate movement, and delivery. First-, second- and third-place prizes were presented at an awards ceremony.
