FMU to host Pee Dee International Festival, Sept. 29

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University will host the ninth-annual Pee Dee International Festival on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The purpose of the festival, which is free and open to the public, is to foster a better understanding of the cultures represented in the Pee Dee and increase appreciation for the global community. The event will feature music, food booths, cultural displays and children’s games.

This year’s festival will feature the Chinese Acrobat and Stunt Troupe. Headed by Grandmaster Yung Chi Chung, a former member of the Golden Star Chinese Acrobats of Taiwan R.O.P., the troupe has performed all across the western United States and aims to preserve the rich heritage of the Chinese artistic culture.

Musical performances will include Caribbean Drums, a Mexican fiesta, the Highland Pipes and Drums, and Accordion Bob. Activities for children will include international games, Belgian horse rides, exotic animals, face painting, and a mime. International food, as well as booths and displays from numerous countries, will also be featured.

This year’s festival will also feature a “volksmarch,” which will follow FMU’s cross country course and end at the German Garden. Volksmarch is German term meaning “a people’s walk.” It is a non-competitive walk along a prescribed trail and is designed to encourage physical fitness, promote camaraderie, and enjoy nature.

The partners who present the festival are FMU, the Florence Family YMCA, the Florence Chamber of Commerce, and Florence-Darlington Technical College. The major corporate sponsors are Nan Ya Plastics Corp. of America, Roche Carolina Inc., and Honda of South Carolina Manufacturing Inc.

For more information about the festival, call the FMU Community Relations Office at 843-661-1225.
