FLORENCE, S.C. – Joseph E. Heyward, senior vice president for student affairs at Francis Marion University, recently received a Presidential Citation from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
The award was presented at the fraternity’s 95th Anniversary General Convention in New Orleans on Aug. 5.
The Presidential Citation is an honor recognizing a member’s contributions that broaden the horizons and strengthen the heritage of the fraternity.
Heyward first came to FMU in 1973, left in 1979, and rejoined the university staff in 1983. He has served as interim provost, vice president for university activities, director of student facilities, assistant dean of students, academic counselor and instructor of mathematics at FMU.
He earned a bachelor’s degree at Hampton Institute in Virginia, a master’s degree at Morgan State University, and a doctorate at the University of South Carolina. Heyward is a native of Florence and a graduate of Wilson High School.
