FLORENCE, S.C. – The Dooley Planetarium on the campus of Francis Marion University will present the first showing of a new program titled “Follow the Drinking Gourd,” Sunday, July 8.
The planetarium show will begin at 3 p.m. and admission is free. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Cauthen Educational Media Center.
“Follow the Drinking Gourd” is based on a book of the same name by Jeannette Winter. The program will introduce students to the day and night skies and discuss the importance of the Big Dipper (which enslaved Black Americans called a drinking gourd) in navigating the Underground Railroad.
Following the regular schedule of planetarium programs on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, “Follow the Drinking Gourd” will be repeated July 22, Aug. 12 and 26, Sept. 9 and 23, and Oct. 14 and 28.
