Patriot Right-Hander Signs with St. Louis Cardinals
FLORENCE, S.C. - Francis Marion University right-handed pitcher Sam Greco recently signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent.
The 6-2, 190-pound native of East Greenbush, N.Y. will report to the New Jersey Cardinals, St. Louis’ Class A affiliate in Augusta, N.J. The New Jersey team is a member of the New York-Penn League, and Brian Rupp is the manager.
Greco was signed by Cardinal scout Randy Bensen. According to Greco’s father, the New Jersey squad has projected him as the team’s fifth starter.
This past season at FMU, he posted a 2-4 record with one save and a team-leading 2.70 earned run average. He struck out 40 batters in 46.2 innings, while walking only 14. Opponents batted only .204 against him in 10 appearances.
Greco was one of nine seniors on this past season’s 24-27 Francis Marion squad.
He attended Louisburg (N.C.) College, before transferring to FMU in 1999.
Six other former Patriots are currently playing in the minor leagues. Catcher Tim Dockery is playing for the Atlantic City (N.J.) Surf in the independent Atlantic League, the same league that right-handed pitcher Jeremy Halpin of the Lehigh Valley Diamonds plays in. Catcher Steve Mitrovich plays with the Richmond (Va.) Roosters in the Frontier League, while left-handed pitcher Nat Stoner plays with the Fargo-Moorhead (N.D.) Redhawks in the Northern League. Pitcher and catcher J.
