Patriot Women Take Aim at Lady Owls in PBC Tournament, Wednesday

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s basketball team will face 20th-ranked Kennesaw State University in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, Wednesday (Feb. 28) at 7 p.m.

The tournament will be held in the 2,500-seat Finis Horne Arena on the campus of Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.

The Francis Marion women ended the regular season on a hot streak, winning 14 of their last 15 contests to post a 21-5 mark.  KSU (19-7), which has been nationally ranked all season, has dropped four of its last five contests including a 94-89 decision to FMU on Feb. 17 in Florence.

FMU enters the tournament as the second seed from the North Division, while KSU is the third seed from the South Division.

If the Patriots win on Wednesday, they would play in Friday’s second semifinal contest at 3 p.m. against the winner of the top-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State University and Augusta State University quarterfinal contest.  The tournament championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m.

Senior guard Christy Wright leads FMU in scoring (14.6 points per game) and assists (3.8 assists per game), while junior guard-forward Christy Thomas chips in 11.2 ppg.  Needing only nine points to reach 1,500 for her career, Wright is attempting to become one of only a handful of players at the Division II level to amass 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists.

Senior 5-9 forward Amie Kane leads the Lady Owls in scoring at 19.8 ppg, while 5-9 senior Monika Dajksler is averaging 15.6 ppg.

KSU leads the all-time series with Francis Marion 7-4.  The two teams have never met in the Peach Belt Tournament.

The PBC Men’s Tournament quarterfinals will be held Thursday, also at Lander.  The men’s semifinals will be Friday at 5 and 7 p.m., and the championship game will be Saturday at 7 p.m.  FMU did not qualify for the men’s tournament.
