FMU Hosts Swamp Fox Invitational Volleyball Tournament, Friday and Saturday

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s volleyball team will open its 2001 season when the Patriots host the Swamp Fox Invitational Tournament, Friday and Saturday (Aug. 24-25).

Friday’s action will begin at 11 a.m. in the Smith University Center and continue through approximately 8 p.m.  Admission is free.  Matches will resume Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and continue through approximately 5 p.m.

The nine-team field includes Ashland University, the University of Charleston (WV), Limestone College, Newberry College, North Carolina Central University, the University of West Alabama, Wheeling Jesuit University, Wingate University, and FMU.

FMU will play a pair of matches on Friday: Limestone at 11 a.m. and Charleston at 5 p.m.  All of Saturday’s matches will be determined by Friday’s pool play results.

Second-year Francis Marion head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick welcomes back two starters, senior setter Jen Michael and junior outside hitter Jen Melahn, from last year’s 13-21 squad that finished sixth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season.

“I am very excited about the upcoming season,” Kirkpatrick said.  “We are very young and once we get our feet wet, it will be interesting to see how the squad develops.”

The 2001 Patriot roster includes seven newcomers, including five from South Carolina (and two from the Pee Dee).  FMU will play a 30-match schedule this fall that includes 11 home matches and a rigorous 14-match PBC slate.
