FLORENCE, S.C. – Margie Covington, coordinator of the Computer Science Department at Francis Marion University, spoke to Marlboro County High School honor students at the school’s academic awards celebration program on May 13.

Covington spoke to approximately 100 honor students and their families about several aspects of the college experience, such as getting into college, paying for college, reasons for attending college, and being successful in college.

Students in grades nine through 11 were recognized for receiving all A’s and all A’s and B’s. MCHS National Honor Society students were also inducted.

Covington is a Bennettsville native and graduated from Bennettsville High School with honors 35 years ago. She earned undergraduate degrees from FMU and Erskine College, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of South Carolina.

Prior to joining the FMU faculty in 1985, she taught in Marlboro County public schools, as well as at Marlboro Academy.
