Sand Hills Science Fair to be held at FMU, Thursday-Saturday

FLORENCE, S.C. - The 46th-annual Sand Hills Regional Science Fair will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (March 21-23) at Francis Marion University in the Smith University Center gymnasium.

Middle and senior high school students from Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Horry, Lee, Marion, Marlboro and Williamsburg counties will participate.  Officials expect 250 to 300 science projects to be exhibited during the three-day event.

The fair will be open to the public without charge Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m.  The awards presentation, also open to the public free of charge, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium.

The Science Fair competition will have two divisions, with students in grades six through eight competing in the junior division and those in grades nine through 12 in the senior division.  Categories in both divisions include behavioral and social sciences, botany, chemistry, earth and space sciences, zoology and microbiology, mathematics, and physics.  The senior division also includes biochemistry, engineering, environmental sciences, mathematics and computer science, and gerontology, medicine and health.

Numerous prizes and certificates will be awarded in each of the divisions.  Two grand-prize winners will travel to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, Ky., in early May.

Fred Clayton, chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Francis Marion (telephone 843-661-1442), is the fair’s director.
