Dillon's CIS Program Establishes FMU Scholarship

FLORENCE---The board of directors of the Communities in Schools program of Dillon County has voted unanimously to establish a scholarship for high school seniors at Francis Marion University.

The scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, will go to a senior from Dillon High School, Lake View High School and Latta High School.

In early December, CIS partnered with the Latta Rotary Club in sponsoring a barbecue supper for a fundraiser.  Money received from this event was divided between the two sponsoring organizations.  Since the Latta Rotary Club uses this money for scholarships, the CIS Board of Directors saw the need for using its funds to present scholarships to FMU.

FMU President Fred Carter, also a member of the CIS board, pledged to match the funds so that three scholarships could be presented to a senior from Dillon, Lake View and Latta high schools.

“We are pleased to be a part of this initiative that enhances the opportunity for those who need financial help to attend our university,” said Garry L. Ballard, FMU’s director of communications.
