FLORENCE, S.C. – The Gladys Hite Tennis Scholarship has been established at Francis Marion University.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist an outstanding athlete who is a member of the FMU women’s tennis team.
The Hite scholarship, which will be endowed in the amount of $10,000, is an offshoot of a scholarship established in 1978 by Hite and seven other women tennis players from the Florence area.
Hite served as head coach of the Patriot women’s tennis team during the 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1975 seasons, compiling a 32-13 record. Her .711 winning percentage still stands as the highest of any FMU women’s tennis coach. The team’s most valuable player award was named in her honor in 1973 and has been presented every year since.
The recipient of the Hite scholarship must meet the admission requirements of FMU without restriction, and must meet all eligibility requirements set forth by the NCAA and be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse prior to enrollment.
The award may be renewed annually to the same recipient, on the recommendation of her coach, during her academic career (four years) as long as she remains in good standing with the institution and the NCAA.
