FLORENCE, S.C. – The Lowcountry of South Carolina Scholarship has been established at Francis Marion University.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist outstanding students who are residents of a county in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
The recipient must be a resident of Allendale, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton or Jasper counties. The recipient must also be an academically promising freshman or upperclassman with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and must demonstrate financial need. Repeat awards are allowed.
The scholarship was established with a $5,000 gift from Ron S. Banks of Charleston, a 1985 graduate of FMU. Additional donors are being sought to permanently endow the scholarship in the amount of $25,000.
“Although the majority of our students are native to the Pee Dee region, FMU attracts students from throughout South Carolina, including the Lowcountry,” said Scott Faulkenberry, executive director of the FMU Foundation. “The establishment of the Lowcountry Scholarship emphasizes the regional presence of FMU and illustrates that the university draws many students from outside the Pee Dee region.”
Those interested in contributing to the scholarship may call the FMU Foundation office at 843-661-1481.
