FLORENCE, S.C. – John M. Kirby Jr., superintendent of Dillon School District 3 in Latta, presented a $10,000 check to the Francis Marion University Foundation recently.
The money goes toward the Latta School Board of Trustees Education Scholarship, which was established and endowed by the board in the amount of $10,000 in 1999. The board made a second contribution of $10,000 during the 2000-01 school year. The latest contribution brings the scholarship’s endowment to $30,000.
The scholarship is awarded to a graduate of Latta High School who is majoring in education or seeking teaching certification at FMU. The recipient must have a grade-point average of 2.75 or greater. Preference is given to an undergraduate student. If no current graduates of Latta High School are eligible, consideration will be given to teacher aides, as well as to licensed teachers from the district who are pursuing advanced-degree credit from FMU.
