FLORENCE, S.C. – Two Francis Marion University baseball players have signed to play in the Coastal Plain League during the summer of 2003, bringing to three the number of Patriots who have reached agreements to participate in the collegiate league.
Right-handed pitcher Erin Jones (Dillon, S.C.) and left-hander Phil Padgett (Surfside Beach, S.C.) have signed to play with the Gastonia Grizzlies.
Earlier, FMU newcomer Jason Weaver (Lake City, S.C.) agreed to again play with the Florence RedWolves. Weaver, a switch-hitting infielder, transferred to Francis Marion from the University of South Carolina last summer.
Jones led FMU in 2002 with a 12-6 record and a 2.29 earned run average. He set team records with 106 strikeouts, 11 complete games, and 117.2 innings pitched. Last summer, he pitched for the Schenectady Mohawks of the New York Collegiate League, where he posted a 9-0 record with a 0.24 ERA. He tallied 64 strikeouts in 73.2 innings, while recording five complete games and four shutouts. Upon returning to the Pee Dee, he made one late-season appearance for the RedWolves.
Padgett was 2-1 with one save and a 3.44 ERA last spring for the Patriots. He made 16 appearances and struck out 39 batters in only 34 innings. He made a pair of appearances for the CPL’s Fayetteville Swampdogs last summer with a 1-0 record and a 3.86 ERA.
The Coastal Plain League consists of 12 teams in three states.
