FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University junior forward Katie Roberts has been selected as the Peach Belt Conference women’s soccer “Player of the Week” for the week of Sept. 9-15.
Roberts, a native of Frederick, Md., scored nine goals on 15 shots and recorded three assists during three FMU victories last week.
She tallied five goals and one assist during FMU’s 11-0 win over St. Andrews College, one goal short of the team and NCAA Division II national record for goals in a match. It was her fourth career hat trick. She scored both goals in the Patriots’ 2-1 win over Eckerd College in the opening round of the UNF Invitational Tournament, and then added two goals and two assists on the second day as Francis Marion downed Queens University of Charlotte 6-1.
She was named the MVP of the tournament, and FMU captured the team title.
Roberts leads the conference in scoring with 10 goals and three assists in only six matches, while helping lead the Patriots to a 5-1-0 mark. She continues to move up several Patriot career record lists, with 31 goals and 20 assists in only 47 career matches.
As a freshman in 2000, Roberts was twice named “Player of the Week” before sweeping the conference “Player of the Year” and “Freshman of the Year” post-season awards. She earned “Player of the Week” honors once in 2001, while again gaining All-Conference recognition.
FMU opens its 2002 conference schedule on Wednesday (Sept. 18) when the Patriots host UNC Pembroke at 4 p.m.
