FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s basketball team will host Presbyterian College in a non-conference contest, Tuesday (Nov. 26) at 6 p.m. in the Smith University Center.
The Patriots (1-1) split their opening two contests over the weekend in the FMU/Sleep Inn Classic, while Presbyterian (0-2) opened its season with two losses in the Kennesaw State University/Ron Walker Memorial Classic.
FMU senior 6-0 center Jontell Johnson (19.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg) needs only two blocked shots to set a new Peach Belt Conference career mark. The Charleston native currently has 168, one behind the PBC mark of 169 established by Jeannette Polk of Augusta State University in 1994. Over the weekend, Johnson moved into second place on the FMU career list for blocked shots, and now trails only Tracey Tillman’s unreachable total of 468, set in 1988 when the program was under NAIA affiliation.
FMU leads the all-time series with the Blue Hose 9-2, including an 82-79 win at Presbyterian in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Division II national tournament.
Both teams are under the direction of first-year coaches: Valecia Tedder at Francis Marion and Leigh Irwin at Presbyterian.
The FMU men’s team (0-1) will travel to Augusta, Ga., on Tuesday evening to play Paine College in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
