FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University will host the semifinals and finals of the 2002 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament, Friday and Saturday (Nov. 8-9) afternoons.
All three matches will be played on the FMU Soccer Field, located behind the Smith University Center. Admission is free.
The two semifinal matches will be played on Friday afternoon. Third-seeded and eighth-ranked USC Spartanburg (16-2-0) will play seventh-seeded USC Aiken (7-9-1) at noon, while top-seeded FMU (15-4-0) will meet fifth-seeded Lander University (11-7-0) at 2:30 p.m.
Friday’s two semifinal winners will meet for the tournament championship at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 9).
FMU, in the midst of a 12-match winning streak, earned a first-round bye by virtue of its winning the regular-season crown, the program’s second in three years. Lander upset fourth-seeded Clayton College & State University 4-0 on Wednesday in a first-round match.
USCS downed UNC Pembroke 6-0 on Tuesday, while USCA pulled off the biggest upset in the tournament’s 12-year history with a 2-1 win over second-seeded University of North Florida on Tuesday evening.
Francis Marion is 9-10-1 in the previous 11 PBC Tournaments, including winning the 1999 tournament title. The Patriots previously hosted the tournament in 1993 and 2000.
FMU trails in the all-time series with Lander 8-22-2, but the Patriots have won five of the last seven meetings, including a 3-2 win in Greenwood earlier this season.
