Gioscia Earns All-District Academic Hoop Honor

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University sophomore point guard Anne Gioscia has been selected to the Verizon Academic All-District III College Division women’s basketball team.

This awards program is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and District III includes Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and North and South Carolina.

Gioscia was named to the five-member first team.  A second-team was also named.  Gioscia will now appear on the All-America ballot, with voting results to be announced in the spring.

Gioscia, a native of Jefferson City, Tenn., is majoring in sociology with a psychology minor, and owns a perfect 4.00 grade point average.  She is a member of the Baptist Collegiate Ministries and the Campus Outreach organization.  She is also a youth leader at St. John’s Episcopal Church.  Each of her two years, she has been named to Swamp Fox Honor Roll and was named to the 2001 Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll.

On the basketball court, she has started every contest this year and is averaging 9.8 points, 2.9 assists, and 1.5 rebounds per game.  She ranks as the second-best three-point shooter in the Peach Belt (39.3 percent) and is fourth in three-pointers made per game.

She has helped lead Francis Marion to a 16-9 record with one regular-season contest remaining.  The Patriots are currently tied for second place in the Peach Belt’s North Division.

As a freshman last year, Gioscia averaged 7.2 ppg as the Patriot women posted a 24-7 record and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
