FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University senior Laszlo Leiter has been named the Peach Belt Conference men’s tennis “Player of the Week” for the week ending April 1, the second time he has earned this award in 2002.
Leiter, a native of Budapest, Hungary, compiled a 7-1 singles record at the No. 2 position, including a straight-sets win over the nation’s 50th-ranked singles player, and a 5-3 doubles record at the No. 3 spot. His lone singles loss was in three sets to the nation’s 34th-ranked player.
For the season, Leiter is 12-3 in singles play and ranked 37th in the latest NCAA Division II rankings. He also owns a 10-5 doubles record.
He has helped lead the 12th-ranked Patriots to an 11-5 mark and third place in the Peach Belt standings. Each of the squad’s last seven matches (4-3 record) have been against nationally ranked opponents, and all three of the losses were to squads ranked in the Top 15.
FMU returns to action Thursday at 26th-ranked Anderson College at 3 p.m. The Patriots will host Newberry College, Friday at 2:30 p.m. on the Kassab Courts.
Armstrong Atlantic State University sophomore Zsofi Golopencza garnered the weekly award on the women’s side.
