FLORENCE, S.C. - Francis Marion University middle infielder Mark Ford signed a minor league free agent contract with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday (June 18).
Ford immediately reported to the White Sox’s Rookie League team in Bristol, Tenn. Bristol opened its season Tuesday evening, when it hosted the Martinsville Phillies.
Ford becomes the second member of the 2002 FMU squad to sign a professional contract. Left-handed pitcher Hal Chafey was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and is currently with the New Jersey Cardinals, a Class A Short Season affiliate.
A native of Charlotte, Ford batted .293 with two home runs, 30 runs batted in, and 39 runs scored in 53 contests this past season. He shared the team lead in runs scored and was second in stolen bases with 17 in 23 attempts. He recorded a .396 on-base percentage and was named the team’s most valuable player.
In three seasons at FMU, he hit .287 in 141 games with 94 runs scored, 24 doubles, three home runs, 62 RBIs, and 35 stolen bases (in 44 attempts).
Ford attended UNC Greensboro for one season prior to transferring to Francis Marion in 1999.
