FLORENCE, S.C. - Francis Marion University left-handed pitcher Hal Chafey was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
The 6-foot-3-inch 190-pound Chafey was taken as the 612th pick in the two-day, 50-round
draft. He may be assigned to the New Jersey Cardinals, a Class A Short Season affiliate.
A native of Moore, S.C., Chafey compiled a 2-0 mark in 15 appearances this past season for the Patriots. He posted an 8.80 earned run average despite striking out 21 batters in only 15.1 innings pitched.
Chafey, 22, is a 1999 graduate of Byrnes High School, and attended The Citadel for two years before transferring to Francis Marion. He played on the 2000 Citadel squad and was redshirted during the 2001 campaign.
Chafey was one of 12 Peach Belt Conference players chosen in the draft.
