Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates establishes scholarship at FMU

FLORENCE, S.C. – Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates, P.A. of Florence has established a scholarship to assist outstanding students at Francis Marion University.

The Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates, P.A. Scholarship will be endowed in the amount of $50,000.

Recipients of the scholarship must have a major concentration in a science-related field and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. All classes are eligible for the scholarship. Repeat awards are allowed, provided all qualifications are met and the amount of the scholarship will vary.

“We wanted to give the university great latitude in using this scholarship to attract the best students,” said Dr. Bill Edwards of Pee Dee Spine Center.

During its 30-year history, Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates has enjoyed a close relationship with FMU. Dr. J. Lorin Mason Jr., a retired partner in the practice, served as FMU’s Board of Trustees chairman, and Dr. Robert Moore, an FMU alumnus and former Patriot basketball player, is a former member of the Foundation Board. Moore and Dr. Rob Elvington and Dr. Patrick Denton have served as team physicians for the FMU athletic squads.

Over the years, Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates has also supported the university with yearly donations to the Swamp Fox Club, formerly the Patriots Brigade. “Our group has been supportive of the university’s entire existence and realizes that it is a wonderful asset to our community that must be strengthened with philanthropic efforts,” says Dr. Joseph W. Dunlap Jr., president of the 10-physician orthopaedic practice.

Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates, P.A., is Florence’s premier orthopaedic practice, specializing in disorders of bones, joints, tendons, arthroscopic surgery, trauma surgery, surgery of the hand, sports-related injuries, total joint replacements, and surgery of the spine. The recently opened Pee Dee Spine Center treats patients with surgical and nonsurgical conditions of the neck and the back and has become a major referral source for patients in Eastern South Carolina and Southeastern North Carolina.

Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates, P.A. is staffed by Joseph W. Dunlap, Jr., M.D.; W. S. “Bill” Edwards Jr., M.D.; Robert W. Moore, M.D.; Robert E. Elvington Jr., M.D.; Rakesh P. Chokshi, M.D.; Samuel G. Agnew, M.D.; Patrick K. Denton, M.D.; Anthony W. Alexander, M.D.; Dewey N. Ervin, M.D.; and A. Cecil Bozard Jr., M.D.
