Swamp Fox Writing Project at FMU announces winners of Langston Hughes writing contest
FLORENCE, S.C. – The Swamp Fox Writing Project at Francis Marion University has announced the winners of its Langston Hughes writing contest. The purpose of the contest was to celebrate the centennial of African-American writer Langston Hughes’ birth.
There were four categories in the contest: Primary (grades K-3), Elementary (grades 4-6), Middle (grades 6-8), and High School (grades 9-12). Topics and formats varied by category.
Winners, along with their school and school district, are as follows:
Primary: Lauren Burt, Montessori School, Florence.
Elementary: Hannah Samuel, St. John’s Elementary School, Darlington County; Cody Watson, St. John’s Elementary School, Darlington County; Shantel Lowery, Theodore Lester Elementary School, Florence District 1.
Middle School: Derek Wilson, Johnakin Middle School, Marion District 1; Kaneisha McClain, Wallace Elementary/Middle School, Marlboro County; Latrell Wilson, Wallace Elementary/Middle, Marlboro County.
High School: Valerie Rush, Timmonsville High School, Florence District 4.
