Harpsichord duo to perform at FMU, Jan. 28
FLORENCE, S.C. – Shawn Leopard and John Paul will give a concert titled “Music for Two Harpsichords” as part of the Francis Marion University Artist Series, Tuesday, Jan. 28.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in the Hyman Fine Arts Center’s Kassab Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
The program will include a series of pieces for two harpsichords played together. Johann Sebastian Bach and several of his talented sons composed the centerpieces of this repertoire, which also includes works from 17th- and 18th-century France, England and Italy.
Tunes by Haydn, Boccerini, Albéniz and Scott Joplin will also be performed.
This duo travels with two harpsichords from the studio of Anden Houben: one a copy of a 1691 French harpsichord strung in steel and brasses, and the other a “Lautenwerck” (lute-harpsichord) strung in gut. Together they produce a sound both rich and clear, doing equal justice to a Baroque Allegro, a Joplin rag or a Tango by Albéniz.
