Paintings, works in glass to be displayed at FMU

FLORENCE, S.C. – Paintings by Wanda Steppe and works in glass by Nikki Barnes will be on display at Francis Marion University as part of FMU’s Art Gallery Series, Jan. 7 through Feb. 27.

The exhibits will be on display in the Hyman Fine Arts Center gallery on the FMU campus. The exhibits are open to the public, free of charge, and may be viewed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Steppe’s exhibit is titled “Dark Nights of the Soul.” “‘Dark Nights of the Soul’ is a series of paintings that express my feelings of fear and hope that encompass the healing process,” Steppe said. “After a devastating diagnosis and intense recovery period, I began to create work that expressed rather than repressed the fear. I found that this had a very healing effect.”

Barnes’ exhibit is titled “Secret Images.” “Wanting to find out how far a material can be pushed, and how light and color can be formed to express not only a visual, but visceral response, has been my goal since I started working in glass seriously five years ago,” Barnes said. “Every day in the studio is fraught with fear and exhilaration as I continue to try to portray the universe and life at both the cosmic and the infinitesimal levels.”
