FMU Sports Teams in Action This Weekend
The Francis Marion University women’s volleyball team will return to action after a nine-day break when the Patriots open their Peach Belt Conference schedule this weekend. The 5-9 FMU squad will play host to USC Aiken (5-9), Friday at 7 p.m., and Augusta State University (7-7), Saturday at 3 p.m.
Patriot freshman Lezlie Logan leads the squad with six double-figure kill matches and with season averages of 2.69 kills and 1.06 blocks per game. The team’s lone senior, Kim Covil, leads the Patriots in digs, is tied for second in service aces, and is third in kills. The freshman setter tandem of Jessica Strader and Melissa Hennessy is averaging 10.33 assists per game.
FMU, which is 5-0 this season when winning the opening game of the match, leads the all-time series with USCA 35-24 and leads the series with ASU 19-8.
The Patriot men’s and women’s cross country teams will play host to the 16th-annual FMU Invitational Meet, Saturday morning on the Francis Marion campus. The men’s 8,000-meter race will begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by the women’s 5,000-meter race at 9:45 a.m. The starting line for both races will be between the FMU Soccer Field and the FMU Track. Admission is free.
Thirteen men’s teams and 16 women’s squads are expected to participate, including several Peach Belt Conference members and Coker College.
The Patriot men have won their invitational seven of the past eight years.
Following the collegiate meet, the university will also play host to the eighth-annual Pee Dee High School Classic at approximately 10:30 a.m.
The 19th-ranked Francis Marion men’s soccer team (5-2-0 record) will travel to Jefferson City, Tenn., on Saturday to take on Carson-Newman College (3-3-1) in a 2 p.m. non-conference match. Francis Marion has won its last 10 road matches, and come away victorious in the two previous meetings between the two schools. The Patriots’ lone senior, forward Ben Chavolla, leads the team in scoring with nine goals and one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Runion has recorded a 1.32 goals against average with two shutouts.
The 6-2-0 Patriot women’s soccer team, currently sitting atop the PBC standings with a 2-0-0 conference mark, is off this weekend. FMU will return to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. match at 13th-ranked Presbyterian College. Senior Katie Roberts, who owns all the FMU career scoring records, leads the squad with six goals and five assists, while sophomore Katie Riley has recorded five goals and three assists.
The fourth-ranked FMU golf team will play in the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational Tournament, Monday and Tuesday in Columbus, Ga. The 54-hole event will be played at the Country Club of Columbus. The tournament field includes nine teams ranked in the current Precept NCAA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll, including top-ranked University of West Florida.
