FMU Soccer Teams Learn PBC Tournament Foes

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s and women’s soccer teams have learned who they will face in the opening round of this week’s Peach Belt Conference Tournaments.

The FMU women finished tied for fourth place with UNC Pembroke during the PBC regular season with a 4-3-0 conference mark.  By virtue of the Patriots’ 1-0 win over UNCP on Sept. 24, Francis Marion (10-6-1 overall record) earned the fourth seed and will host the fifth-seeded Lady Braves (13-4-0), Tuesday at 2 p.m.  Admission is free.

The women’s tournament semifinals and finals will be played Friday and Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed (after Tuesday’s four first-round matches).

FMU leads the all-time series with UNCP 4-0-0.  The Patriots own a 5-2 mark in the previous three PBC Tournaments, including winning the 2001 title.  Francis Marion eliminated UNCP 5-2 in the opening round of the 2001 tournament.

The Patriot men’s squad started the season 7-3, but dropped six of their last eight matches to finish 9-9-0 overall and in sixth place in the PBC standings at 1-5-0.  The Patriots will play at third-seeded Lander University (10-4-1, 3-3-0) in a first-round match, Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Lander claimed a 2-0 win over FMU on Oct. 25 in Florence.   Francis Marion trails in the all-time series with Lander 24-8-2, but the Patriots have won five of the last nine meetings, and seven of the last eight meetings have been decided by one goal.  Lander has eliminated FMU from the tournament each of the past two years. FMU is 9-11-1 all-time in the PBC Tournament, including a 1-3-1 mark in first-round road matches.  FMU won the 1999 tournament.

The men’s semifinals and finals will be hosted by top-seeded USC Spartanburg, Saturday and Sunday.
