FMU Adds Division I Transfer to Pitching Staff

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University baseball coach Art Inabinet has announced that right-handed pitcher Philip Wilkins of Winnsboro has transferred from the College of Charleston and will join the Patriots for the 2004 season.

Wilkins, a 6-3 205-pound senior, spent three seasons with the Cougar program.  He appeared in 18 games and registered an 0-3 record with 21 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched.

He is a product of Richard Winn Academy, where he played for coach Billy Keels.  As a senior, he posted a 9-1 mark with a 2.50 earned run average and seven complete games.  He earned All-State, All-Region, and All-Star team honors.

He also earned All-Region and All-Star team honors on the football field, and was valedictorian of his senior class with a 3.97 grade point average.

Francis Marion finished last season with a 30-20 record, placed third during the Peach Belt Conference regular season, and earned an invitation to the NCAA Division II national tournament, where the Patriots finished third at the South Atlantic Regional.

Wilkins joins a Patriot pitching staff that ranked fourth in the conference with a 4.16 earned run average, while surrendering a PBC-low 114 walks.

FMU opens its 2004 season Jan. 31 at home against Limestone College.
