Nationally Ranked FMU Tennis Squads Play in Peach Belt Conference Tournament, Thursday Morning

FLORENCE, S.C. – The 18th-ranked Francis Marion University men’s tennis team and the 38th-ranked Patriot women’s squad will both head to Jacksonville, Fla., this week for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.  The tournament will run from Thursday through Saturday at the University of North Florida Tennis Complex.

The 11-3 Patriot men finished fourth during the PBC regular season and will face 14th-ranked and fifth-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University (10-9), Thursday at 11 a.m.  A win would place FMU into the semifinals, Friday at 2 p.m., while a loss would drop FMU into a losers’ bracket match at 5 p.m. on Friday.

AASU defeated the Patriots 6-3 on Feb. 25 in Florence.

All three of the losses for the FMU men have come at the hands of nationally ranked opponents.  The Patriot men, under the direction of head coach Garth Thomson, have earned eight consecutive invitations to the NCAA Division II national tournament.

The 11-6 Francis Marion women are seeded eighth and will meet ninth-seeded and 39th-ranked Augusta State University (10-10), Thursday at 8 a.m.  The winner of that match will move on to face top-seeded and seventh-ranked Georgia College & State University (16-3), Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m.  The loser of the FMU-ASU match will return to the court Friday at 2:30 p.m.

FMU edged the ASU women 5-4 on March 23 in Augusta, Ga.
