FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University senior center Jontell Johnson has been named the Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball “Player of the Week,” for the final week of the 2002-03 season, Feb. 24-March 1. It is the second time this season she has earned the weekly honor.
The 6-0 Charleston native averaged 22.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 2.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game as the Patriots split two games last week. She shot a sizzling 60.0 percent from the field and 93.8 percent (15 of 16) from the free throw line.
In last Wednesday’s 64-63 loss to USC Aiken, she equaled her career high of 29 points and with 15 rebounds came within one of her career high in that category. In her final home appearance on Saturday, she tallied 16 points, eight rebounds, and three steals to help lead the Patriots to a 76-62 upset of Clayton College & State University.
Entering Tuesday’s first-round PBC Tournament game in Columbus, Ga., Johnson leads Francis Marion in scoring (15.2 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg), field goal percentage (54.0%), free throw percentage (78.7%), and blocked shots (58). She is the only senior on the 10-17 Patriot squad, which includes four freshmen and four sophomores.
Johnson continues to improve her Peach Belt Conference career record for blocked shots, which now stands at 222. She has scored 952 career points and grabbed 783 career rebounds.
Johnson is a product of James Island High School, where she earned All-State, All-Region, and All-Lowcountry honors.
