Kevin Lasher of Florence has been named chairman of the Department of Political Science and Geography at Francis Marion University.
He replaces Neal Thigpen, who had been serving as interim chair of the department.
Lasher is an associate professor of political science at FMU. He earned the B.A. degree in psychology from Youngstown State University, and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from the University of Georgia.
Prior to coming to FMU in 1993, Lasher was an instructor of political science at Lakeland Community College in Mentor, Ohio, and McKendree College in Japan. He was also a teaching assistant at UGA, and a research assistant for Georgia’s Center for East-West Trade Policy.
His research interests include democratization in Russia, women and U.S. foreign policy, U.S.-Japanese security issues, and institutional effectiveness and assessment.
Lasher is a member of several university committees and has published numerous scholarly papers. He is a member of the South Carolina Political Science Association and Pi Sigma Alpha, a political science honor society.
