Patriot Netters End Season in National Poll; Two Individuals Listed in Final Rankings
FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s tennis team is ranked 25th in the final 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 40 poll, while two Patriots are listed in the final individual rankings.
The Patriot men compiled an 11-12 record, with nine of the defeats being to nationally ranked opponents, and four losses by narrow 5-4 decisions. The 2004 season saw FMU miss the NCAA Division II national tournament for the first time in ten years.
The Patriots opened the season unranked, but later occupied positions 38, 31, 33, 34, and 26. It is the ninth straight year FMU has appeared in the end-of-the-season national poll and the 10th time in 11 seasons.
Freshman Chatwinder Singh (Chandigarh, India) is ranked 39th among Division II singles players, and along with sophomore Kevin Taylor (Benoni, South Africa) is ranked 14th in doubles.
Playing at the No. 2 singles position, Singh compiled a 15-4 record, including 11 consecutive wins to close the season, and had a 6-2 mark against tough Peach Belt Conference competition. Following a mid-season lineup change, Singh and Taylor combined for a 10-3 mark at the No. 1 doubles spot.
