FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University women’s basketball coach Valecia Tedder has announced the signing of Shavone Mack of Cross to a national letter of intent to attend FMU and play for the Patriots in 2004-05.
Mack, a 6-4 center, is a product of Cross High School, where she played for coaches Stanley Hickson, C. Watkin, and Linsey Bailey.
As a senior, she averaged 13.3 points and 12.0 rebounds per game, while helping lead Cross to a spot in the Class A state playoffs.
A two-time All-Region selection, Mack earned her team’s Coach’s Award and was a Wendy’s High School Heisman state finalist. She also ran track and played volleyball for the Trojans.
She was her school’s recipient of the prestigious Governor’s Citizenship Award for 2004.
“I am very excited about Shavone joining our program,” said Tedder. “She possesses both size and athleticism, and will give us a defensive presence in the paint. She has long arms, can block shots and run the floor, and has the potential to be a dominant force in the Peach Belt Conference.”
Francis Marion loses two seniors from last season’s 14-13 squad that placed third in the PBC’s North Division standings.
Mack joins 5-11 forward-center Shonelle Downer of Columbia, 5-11 center Vanessa Goff of Columbia, and 5-10 guard Renee Guilliams of Troutville, Va., who signed with the Patriots during last fall’s early signing period. FMU will also gain the services of two redshirt freshmen, 5-6 guard Brittany Young and 5-10 forward Creshenda Singletary.
