FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s soccer and volleyball teams will open their 2004 seasons this weekend by playing host to a pair of tournaments.
The Patriot volleyball team will play host to the 10-team Joseph B. DuRant Memorial Invitational Tournament, Friday and Saturday in the Smith University Center.
Matches will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and continue through 9 p.m. Saturday’s play will start at 9 a.m. and continue through 7 p.m.
On Friday, FMU will meet Carson-Newman College at 1 p.m. and Wingate University at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Francis Marion will play the University of Charleston (W.V.) at 11 a.m. and Barton College at 3 p.m.
Other teams in the tournament are Lander University, the State University of West Georgia, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, USC Aiken, and Presbyterian College.
FMU returns three starters from last year’s 11-24 squad.
The Patriot women’s soccer team will play host to the fourth-annual Francis Marion Invitational Tournament, Friday and Sunday on the FMU Soccer Field.
Friday’s matches will have the University of North Florida meeting 18th-ranked Carson-Newman at 1 p.m. and FMU playing Lees-McRae College at 4 p.m. FMU and UNF will swap opponents on Sunday, with FMU again playing at 4 p.m.
The Patriots, 67-10-2 all-time at home, return eight starters from last year’s 11-7-1 team.
Admission to both tournaments is free.
