FMU Soccer and Cross Country Teams Visit Greenwood

FLORENCE, S.C. – Four of the Francis Marion University fall sports teams will be in Greenwood, S.C., on Saturday for Peach Belt Conference contests.

The Patriot men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the Peach Belt Conference Championship Meet, Saturday morning on the grounds of the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home.  The 8,000-meter men’s race will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the 5,000-meter women’s race at 10 a.m.

The FMU men’s and women’s soccer teams will play Lander University in a key PBC doubleheader.  The women’s match will start at 1 p.m. and the men’s match at 3:30 p.m.

The 9-3-0 Francis Marion women occupy second place in the PBC standings with a 4-1-0 conference mark, while Lander is 6-4-4 overall and 1-2-3 in the Peach Belt.  FMU has never lost to the Bearcats in six previous meetings, outscoring Lander 32-1.

The Patriot men (7-7-1, 2-2-0) are tied for fourth place in the PBC standings, but are only a half-game out of second place.  Lander won all eight of its non-conference matches, but has struggled to an 0-2-2 conference mark.

This will be the 36th meeting between FMU and Lander on the men’s soccer field, equaling the most visited series in Francis Marion history.  The Bearcat men lead the series 25-8-2, but FMU is 2-2 in its last four trips to Greenwood.  Eight of the last nine meetings have been decided by one goal with three of the matches going to overtime.
