FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University volleyball team will face its toughest test of the 2004 season when the Patriots face two of the Peach Belt Conference’s top programs on the road this weekend.
Francis Marion, enjoying its most successful season since 1999, is 16-9 overall and tied for second in the PBC with a 5-1 mark.
The Patriots will face 10th-ranked University of North Florida (17-5, 7-0), the conference leader, Friday at 7 p.m. in Jacksonville, Fla. On Saturday, FMU will travel north to Savannah, Ga., to play Armstrong Atlantic State University (20-4, 5-1), the team tied with FMU for second place, in a 4 p.m. match.
Saturday’s match will be webcast live at http://www.athletics.armstrong.edu/volley/vblive.html.
Sophomore Lezlie Logan, last year’s PBC Co-Freshmen of the Year, leads FMU in kills (4.14) and blocks (0.69) per game. Sophomore setter Melissa Hennessy is averaging 11.82 assists per game, while sophomore libero Jessica Strader is digging out 5.09 balls per game and has set a PBC and school season record with 15 matches of at least 20 digs.
FMU lost a close four-game decision to UNF earlier this season in Florence. The Patriots have dropped 11 straight matches to North Florida and 10 consecutive matches to AASU.
Following the roadtrip, Francis Marion will close out its 2004 regular season with six Peach Belt home matches.
