FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University sophomore forward Ashley Fortune has been named the Peach Belt Conference women’s soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 3.
The Bothell, Wash., native tallied eight goals and two assists in a pair of FMU wins last week. She scored a PBC-record and school-record-tying six goals in a 9-0 rout of Belmont Abbey College on Sept. 29. Here total was only one goal shy of the NCAA Division II national record. She also recorded one assist during the match for a total of 13 points, a new school and PBC record and the third highest total in Division II history.
Later in the week (Oct. 2), she recorded two goals and one assist in a 4-1 conference win over Columbus State University.
She leads Francis Marion with 13 goals and 30 points, and has helped guide the Patriots to a 6-2-0 record and a 2-0-0 start in the PBC. FMU is listed among the other schools receiving votes in the latest NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll.
She also leads the conference in points, goals, goals per game, and game-winning goals (5). With four assists, she ranks fifth in that category.
In her first season at FMU, Fortune is a transfer from Texas Christian University, where she earned Conference USA All-Freshman Team honors in 2003. She is a product of Inglemoor High School, where she was an All-KingCo performer.
Francis Marion returns to action on Saturday when the Patriots travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to face PBC foe Georgia College & State University at 7 p.m.
