PBC Volleyball Tournament Schedule Set

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University volleyball team will meet Lander University in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon (Nov. 12) at 2 p.m.  The tournament is being hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga.

The 20-13 Patriots will enter the single-elimination event as the third seed, while Lander (13-20) is the sixth seed.  FMU will be attempting to win a tournament match for the first time since a 3-0 decision over Lander in the 1999 tournament.

Francis Marion was picked to finish tied for sixth in the preseason PBC coaches poll, but the Patriots went from a 20-loss campaign in 2003 to a 20-win season.

Seventh-ranked University of North Florida (25-5) is the tournament’s top-seed and will play Augusta State University (2-28) at 10 a.m.  Second-seeded and 21st-ranked AASU (27-6) will face UNC Pembroke (9-21) at noon, and following the FMU/Lander match, fourth-seeded USC Aiken (21-12) will battle fifth-seeded USC Upstate (15-14) at 4 p.m.

The tournament semifinals are set for Friday at 6 and 8 p.m.  If FMU wins its quarterfinal match, the Patriots would face the AASU/UNCP winner in the first semifinal.  The championship match is set for Saturday at 3 p.m.

FMU swept the regular-season series from Lander, winning both matches in three games.

Sophomore Lezlie Logan leads the young FMU team in kills (4.13 per game), while freshman Michelle Settergren leads the squad in hitting percentage (.286).  Sophomore setter Melissa Hennessy is averaging 12.02 assists per game.  Junior Kelly Feber has produced 22 double-doubles (kills and digs), while sophomore libero Jessica Strader has set a new Patriot record for digs in a season (629), while also setting a school and conference season mark for matches (17) with at least 20 digs.  There are no seniors on this year’s roster.
