Patriot Women Host St. Andrews on Saturday
FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s basketball team will begin the New Year by playing host to St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Saturday (Jan. 3) at 2 p.m. in the Smith University Center.
Francis Marion (5-2) will look to rebound from Tuesday’s 12-point loss at Fayetteville State University, while St. Andrews (2-4) will be playing its first game in 18 days. FMU has won all seven previous meetings between the two programs.
Sophomore 6-0 guard Danielle Moore continues to lead FMU in both scoring (13.4 points per game) and rebounding (7.1 rebounds per game).
However, the Patriots have lost the services of junior guard Velvet Dotson, who was second on the squad in scoring (11.7 ppg) and leading the team in assists (3.3 assists per game). The Seneca native has withdrawn from school and returned home to assist an ailing family member. Dotson played one-and-a-half seasons at Daytona Beach Community College before transferring to FMU.
Francis Marion will also be without senior 6-2 center Marta Losonczy (5.7 ppg) for the second straight game as she battles an illness.
St. Andrews dropped its opening four games before winning its last two contests. The Knights are led by 5-9 freshman forward Diana Martinez (12.2 ppg, 9.6 rpg).
The game will also be a match-up between sisters Jennifer and Karen Dewell. Jennifer is a freshman on the Patriot squad, while Karen is a junior on the St. Andrews team. They are natives of Sugar Grove, Va.
Both the FMU men and women will open Peach Belt Conference play on Wednesday with a road game at Lander University.
