Patriots Battle Pirates on Saturday evening

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s and women’s basketball teams will travel to Savannah, Ga., to face Armstrong Atlantic State University in Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, Saturday evening (Jan. 17).

The twinbill will tip off in AASU’s Alumni Arena at 5:30 p.m. with the women’s contest, followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.  Please note that on some FMU schedules, the games are listed as afternoon starts.  Both games will be broadcast over the Internet at

In the nightcap, the 19th-ranked FMU men (13-1, 3-0) will battle the Pirates (12-2, 3-0) in a match-up of two of the PBC’s three remaining unbeaten squads.  AASU was among the schools also receiving votes in this past week’s Top 25 poll.

AASU leads the all-time men’s series 12-10, including five straight wins over the Patriots.

FMU junior Louis McCullough leads the Patriots in scoring (17.2 points per game), and is only 13 points shy of tying Allen Wilson for 13th position on the Patriot career scoring list at 1,066.

In the women’s contest, the Patriots (8-4, 2-1) will be looking for their first win over a nationally ranked opponent in three years.  The 25th-ranked Pirates (11-3 overall record) are among five teams tied for the PBC South Division lead with 2-1 marks.  The Patriots have dropped their last six contests against nationally ranked teams going back to a 69-57 win over 24th-ranked Kennesaw State University in the 2001 Peach Belt Tournament.

FMU leads the women’s series 13-9 including a 62-61 overtime upset of the Lady Pirates last season in Florence, as AASU later won the PBC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA national tournament.
