Patriots Hold Senior Night on Diamond, Friday

FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University baseball team will hold its annual Senior Night when the Patriots play host to North Greenville College, Friday at 6 p.m.

The Patriots will recognize 10 seniors during pre-game ceremonies.  Former FMU baseball coach Gerald Griffin, who established the program in 1973, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Francis Marion enters the final series of the 2004 campaign with a 26-17 record, while North Greenville is 13-24.

FMU will conclude its season with a doubleheader against the Crusaders, Saturday at 1 p.m. on Cormell Field.

The 10 seniors are (with FMU career statistics listed) pitchers Kyle Appenzeller (0-0 record, 11.70 earned run average), Erin Jones (28-14, 2.81 ERA), Phil Padgett (16-8, 3.41 ERA), and Philip Wilkins (5-2, 6 saves, 3.89 ERA); catchers Phil Shantz (.211, 22 runs batted in) and Kenneth Yaeger (.303, 22 RBIs); infielders Adam Dutka (.273, 13 RBIs) and Chris Newman (.312, 35 RBIs, 12-18 stolen bases); and outfielders Darnell Suber (.375) and Derek Wilson (.173, 17 runs scored).

This group has helped Francis Marion to 82 victories over the past three seasons, including last year’s appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Seven of the team’s losses this year have been by one run, and the Patriots are 8-4 against nationally ranked opponents.

Francis Marion leads the all-time series with North Greenville 2-1.  Current Patriot head coach Art Inabinet was the head coach at North Greenville for six seasons prior to coming to Florence.
