FLORENCE---Cynthia A. Lawson of Columbia has been named associate director of admissions at Francis Marion University.
She will also serve as interim director of the Admissions Office, following the recent resignation of Drucilla Russell who took a position elsewhere.
Lawson will coordinate the university’s recruiting, application and admissions process for all new undergraduate students.
“We are pleased to have someone with Ms. Lawson’s background and experience take over the management of our admissions process,” said Provost Richard Chapman.
“This is such a critical position in making high school and transfer students aware of educational programs available at Francis Marion,” he said. “She will do an outstanding job in working with students and their parents in the admissions process.”
This fall, for the fourth straight year, FMU had a record number of freshman applications.
A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Lawson earned a bachelor’s degree at Meredith College in 1984 and a master’s from Duke University in 1993.
Prior to coming to FMU, she was associate director of undergraduate admissions at the University of South Carolina at Columbia for nine years. She also has been associate dean of admissions at Emory & Henry College in Virginia, area director for the American Heart Association in Charlottesville, associate director for student enrollment at Chowan College in North Carolina and an admissions counselor at Meredith College in Raleigh.
