FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University baseball team will play its third consecutive nationally ranked Peach Belt Conference opponent when the Patriots play host to 11th-ranked Augusta State University for a three-game series this weekend.
The two squads will play a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m. on Cormell Field and a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Patriots are 7-5 overall and 1-5 in the PBC with all five losses being to nationally ranked squads. ASU is 10-3 overall and tied for second in the Peach Belt with a 4-2 mark. However, the Jaguars will be playing their first road game of the season.
Entering the weekend series, ASU catcher Sam Barth, a former member of the Florence RedWolves, is riding an NCAA Division II record 47-game hitting streak. Last Wednesday, he broke the previous mark of 46 set by Craig Sizemore of Lenoir-Rhyne College during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Barth’s streak began last season on March 14, 2004, in the second game of a doubleheader with Armstrong Atlantic State University.
FMU junior infielder Omar Quiles has hit in all 12 games this season for FMU and owns a team-leading .458 season average. Freshman right-hander Dylan Owen (1-0, 1.04 earned run average), a native of Cheraw, is expected to start Saturday’s game for the Patriots.
