No. 29 Patriots Host No. 30 Pacers on Baseball Diamond
FLORENCE, S.C. – The 29th-ranked Francis Marion University baseball team will play host to 30th-ranked USC Aiken for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series this weekend.
The two squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. on Cormell Field, followed by a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Patriots are 11-5-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the PBC, while USCA is 10-3 and 3-3. Francis Marion is unbeaten in its last 17 games on Cormell Field. All five of FMU’s losses this season have been to nationally ranked teams.
Senior center fielder Quentin Davis leads the Patriots in hitting with a .452 average. He has hit a pair of home runs and driven in 23 runs, while stealing 14 bases (in 16 attempts). Junior infielder Omar Quiles, who has hit in 16 of the team’s 17 games, is batting .417, and sophomore catcher Michael Ward is hitting .412.
Freshman right-hander Dylan Owen (1-0, 2.03 earned run average) and sophomore lefty Lee Tabor (3-1, 4.26 ERA) are the probable starters for Francis Marion on Saturday.
In the 33-year history of the Francis Marion baseball program, the Patriots have played USCA more than any other opponent. The Pacers lead the all-time series 53-30, but Francis Marion has won six of the last seven meetings in Florence.
