FLORENCE, S.C. – After winning two of three conference games this past weekend, Francis Marion University moved up five positions back into the Top 10 at No. 10 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA Division II Top 30 poll, released on Monday (April 18). FMU is tied with Rollins College for the 10th position.
The Patriots are 30-14-1, and have won 19 of their last 27 contests. This is the eighth consecutive week the Patriots have appeared in the Top 30 poll. This is Francis Marion’s second 30-win season in the past three years, and the program’s seventh all-time.
FMU will play host to Limestone College (28-21-1) on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Although this is not a Peach Belt Conference contest, it is a key game in the South Atlantic Region as far as who may receive at-large bids to the 2005 NCAA Division II national tournament. Limestone is coached by 1979 Francis Marion graduate and former Patriot outfielder Anthony “Chico” Lombardo.
With a 17-12-1 conference mark, the Patriots are fourth in the tightly packed PBC standings, approximately three games out of first place. FMU has concluded its PBC slate, while other conference schools have several PBC series remaining. Eight of FMU’s 14 losses this season have been to nationally ranked opponents.
Six Peach Belt squads are listed in this week’s poll, including three in the Top 10. Central Missouri State University (38-3) remains the No. 1-ranked team after another 4-0 week.
